Keyaki Aikido

Aikido
Aikido means the way of unifying energies and is a modern Japanese martial art for training body and mind through joint practice.
In Aikido, an attack is not blocked but redirected by a strong centre and fluid, seemingly effortless movements. There are no competitions in Aikido since it focuses on resolving conflicts without violence and without losers.
Aikido is for improving physical fitness, flexibility and coordination as well as mental and emotional balance.

Welcome
Getting on the mat and trying out Aikido is a good way to find out what this Japanese martial art is all about. Newcomers are always welcome for a free Aikido try-out. We are a mixed group of adults of various ages, ranging from beginners to advanced.
Beginners usually wear comfortable sports clothes with long pants, or a white martial arts suit if already available. Advanced Aikido practitioner (aikidoka) wear traditional black or blue pantskirts (hakama), and an Aikido master (yudansha) wears a black belt instead of a white one.

Background
We practise Aikido in Ypenburg, a district of the city of The Hague. The Dutch word ypen (iepen) refers to elm trees, like the Japanese word keyaki. Its Japanese character (欅) represents a tree (木), a hand (手) and two people working together (與).
